Tax Is Not Maths. It Is Power

Tax is usually presented through rates, thresholds, exemptions, compliance and revenue. That presentation makes taxation appear technical, almost mathematical. Yet before a single rate is calculated, political decisions have already determined what will be taxed, who will pay, who will be exempt, what revenue will finance and whose needs will command public resources.

Those decisions distribute responsibility, resources, protection, opportunity and power. A tax system determines who carries the costs of sustaining society, who can shift those costs elsewhere, whose contribution is recognised, whose labour remains invisible, and whose claims the state honours.

The defining question is therefore not whether a tax system is mathematically efficient. It is what kind of society the tax system is constructing.

Tax is not maths. It is power.
